On this day on June 22, 1942: The Pledge of Allegiance is formally adopted by U.S. Congress. Written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy to promote patriotism and national unity, the Pledge of Allegiance was formally adopted by Congress on June 22, 1942, as part of the U.S. Flag Code during World War II.

The effort was championed by patriotic groups such as the American Legion and VFW, and the measure was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
