Blairsden:

The legendary residence of C. Ledyard Blair, financier, banking heir and sportsman. Designed by Carrere & Hastings with landscape design by James Lyle Greenleaf, it is considered one of the finest examples of the Beaux Arts movement. Constructed between 1898 and 1903 with approximately 60,000 square feet on four floors, it was regarded as a marvel of planning and engineering using steel and concrete floors on all levels, electrical service, elevators and the finest materials that money could buy. Blair chose a bucolic hilltop setting not too far from New York City and assembled 500 acres of farmland to create his country home. Its sumptuous interior of limestone, marble and rich woods reflects Blair’s lifestyle during the Gilded Age. Italianate gardens were created, extensive rose gardens added by the tennis courts, and a stone and brick staircase linked to a mosaic ramp that led to Ravine Lake.

Elegant weddings for his four daughters took place in this breathtaking setting overlooking the countryside. Inside, the basement held a deep pool, Turkish baths and a squash court. Spacious public rooms on the first floor opened to terraces or the veranda that joined the tea house, or Belvedere. Marble columns and doorways¸ unique and elaborate mantels for the 25 fireplaces, and exquisite moldings accent the home. The second floor was for the family and special guests.

The third floor was for staff (22 in all). When Blair died in 1949, much of the land was divided and sold off, and Blairsden on the remaining 50 acres sold in 1950 to the Sisters of St. John the Baptist who owned it until 2002. During that period the lake frontage was sold and the remaining 30+ acres are offered today. Restoration by the current owners was begun but not completed. The grandeur of Blairsden remains wonderfully intact and will benefit from continued refinement.
